This year's Introduction to Beekeeping Course, like many other events, had to be curtailed due to the Covid19 outbreak and the subsequent lock down. Unfortunately we were only able to present the first evening of the classroom work, on Monday 9th March, to which we had a great attendance of nineteen enthusiastic delegates.

With them only having such a brief introduction into the world of beekeeping, it seemed to me that we should look for ways of providing support and information during what could be a lengthy period of inactivity. I continued to communicate with the group, about such things as their options and the passing of information. Several showed great interest in getting hold of their first colony and two already had. So with the information they had and using a variety of sources there are now nine novices, who are managing 15 colonies in total and very much enjoying it.

In order to offer greater support to them, I appealed for help from NEWBKA members and had a great response from five. I'll take this opportunity to thank Bob Pargeter, Alex Bignall, Linda Cracknell, Ed Payne and Ken Greatbatch for their help in support of the new beekeepers.

This support involved the use of a variety of methods of communication. This included, telephone conversations, emails, video calls and socially distanced visits to go through topics such as inspection, smoker lighting, Queen cell identification. In one case Bob Pargeter donated a frame of eggs and brood which resulted in one novice observing a Queen hatching. All of which helped many to get them through their first weeks.

Unfortunately though, some of the novices had their colonies swarm shortly after getting hold of them and another's colony became queenless. These issues have been resolved and some of the group are looking forward to the delights of extracting their first honey.
