This year four members passed the BBKA Basic Assessment,
the first step in improving beekeeping skills beyond the introductory course. The assessment is practical, not written. It involves frame building, and opening and
examining a hive, while answering questions asked by the assessor. Congratulations to all four members. Hopefully others will be encouraged to follow
suit.
NEWBKA is a branch of the Worcestershire Beekeepers' Association. It exists to promote beekeeping in NE Worcestershire by providing public information, swarm collecting and by running courses for intending and improving beekeepers.
Message from
Dr Jonathan North, after giving a talk on Bee Venom Allergy.
Thank you for arranging
last night's meeting that I thoroughly enjoyed.
You might like to pass back to the group that Dr Karanam and I have discussed the opinion that perhaps all beekeepers should have adrenaline, and we think we might look into this further. We would have to gather data on the number of beekeepers, the number who have fatal reactions and perhaps try to determine how many get proper anaphylaxis and survive vs the number of peanut allergic children with the same data. We're not promising we can get this data and get it published but we'll have a go.
There was a good
attendance for this talk, and many members had the opportunity to ask questions;
Dr North responded. A number of members
made a point of saying how much they had enjoyed the talk.
Don't forget that the first of our Winter Talks will take place tomorrow, Thursday, 10th November, at 7:30 pm at the Bromsgrove School Biology Labs.
Dr Jonathan North, consultant immunologist at City Hospital, Birmingham, will be talking about
We've all had bee stings; how can we recognise if we've become allergic to them? Can we protect ourselves, especially if working alone in isolated places, and if so, how? Come along and find out. We look forward to seeing you.
